Sea Buckthorn: The Essence of Chitral Soil

In the early villages of Chitral life unfolded like a delicate mix of tradition and nature. Here, where the seasons are extreme, and the weather could be as harsh as it was beautiful, the local women hold a secret to preserve their beauty that has passed down through generations.

Sea buckthorn berries, with its vibrant orange color and rich nutrients, were the key to their timeless radiance. The women of Chitral knew that the harsh, dry, and ever-changing climate could wreak havoc on their skin, making it essential to protect their delicate features, especially when preparing for the grand celebration of a young woman's wedding.

Traditionally in Chitral when word spread through the village that a marriage was to be arranged, the community would come together to celebrate not just the union of two souls but also the beauty of their local ecosystem. The girls from the neighbourhood would gather with a sense of excitement, laughter, and sisterhood, armed with the magical ingredients from their surroundings – sea buckthorn berries.

As the preparations for the wedding would begin, the sea buckthorn berries were carefully picked from their thorny bushes. They were crushed to create a paste that carried the essence of the wisdom of generations.

The wedding day would finally arrive, and the bride would sit at the center of a circle formed by her friends and family. With gentle hands, they applied the sea buckthorn paste to her face, forming a protective layer that shielded her from the harsh elements. It wasn't just about enhancing her beauty; it was about preserving the essence of her youth and innocence amidst a world that could be unforgiving.

This tradition of using sea buckthorn as facial treatments was not just a superficial gesture. It was a testament to the deep connection between the desire to look beautiful, the human body, and the medicinal plants and herbs that thrived in the local ecosystem. It was a reminder that nature was their ally, providing not only sustenance but also the means to protect and celebrate the beauty within and around them.

In Chitral, the loving relationship between the women, their land, and the plants that grew in abundance is a timeless tale. It is a story of resilience, unity, and a commitment to preserving the natural beauty that adorned the faces of the local women, mirroring the unspoiled beauty of their homeland.
